bananas
Last night the New York Giants won the superbowl. I love football. If we are home on Sunday, I faithfully watch my teams from preseason through the playoffs. I have crushes on the cute quarterbacks and claim that Troy Aikman, now announcer for Fox, was my high school sweetheart.
Dave doesn't like football. Or maybe he just doesn't understand it. He told me he would watch some of the game with me last night, but he must have only seen a play or two. Which was fine with me.
When the game ended, people living on our block who might have never heard of football would have known that the Giants won. People filled the streets in their blue and white jerseys. Cars stuffed with people drove by honking. People were spilling out of the windows and sunroofs of the cars shouting and cheering and the people standing on the street were giving them high fives.
Suddenly, just like that, Dave loved football. He so badly wanted us to go out and join the revelry. Get in our car and have me poke my head through the sunroof yelling and receiving high fives. He kept opening our window and peeking out to get a better view of the crowds, the flying rolls of toilet paper and the police keeping things in line.
The cheering lasted for hours and amazingly, Andrew, whose window faces that street, slept through the whole thing. One solid perk of the urban baby is that they sleep when noisy things happen. At least ours does.
We went to sleep hearing cheering and shouts of joy. Dave, still excited from the happy scene, asked why I wasn't more excited.
I wanted the Patriots to win.

the ticker-tap parade is tomorrow! tempting....
Good girl, Robyn! I thought I was sick of our teams winning all the time, but I'm sad that the Patriots lost, too. Chris has been on the verge of tears all day. )-:
I remember a similar celebratory spirit when I was in Boston when the Patriots won the superbowl a few years back- it is exciting.
That sounds really fun. It's amazing how strangers can come together when there's something everybody knows just happened. The only time this has worked in OC (since I've lived here) is for earthquakes and fires -- you know, where neighbors I've never seen come out and ask about things. It's probably high time New York had a positive bonding experience.
Why did you name this one "bananas"? I can't figure it out.
And I just have to insert a little NY spirit and say that I think it's AWESOME the Giants won. I don't watch football, and I really don't care that much about the Giants, but what an amazing comeback at the end of the game! And to break a all-season winning streak. Amazing.
Loba,
I agree, it is awesome that they won. An incredible victory, but I am not willing to let go of my New England heritage enough to say that I am glad the Patriots lost. Dave thought that the Giants winning meant we should stay in New York. "Isn't that why they were playing?"
And, congratulations!!! You win the prize!! I called it 'bananas' because everyone was going bananas on our street and I thought for sure I would use the phrase 'going bananas' somewhere in here. But then I never did and forgot to go back and change the title. Then I wondered who would notice...and you did!!!
Three cheers for Loba!

Robyn, I forgot--where were you born, again? Massachusetts? New Hampshire? Connecticut, was it?
Oh no, that's right! You were born in....
[Don't worry. Your secret's safe with me].
I thought the brownies might have bananas in them. Delicious...
Robyn, I just wanted to say that I really did think your secret was safe here. Since this post is so far down the line, I didn't think my comment (suggesting you might be a born New Yorker) would ever be seen by anyone's eyes but yours. Then, last night, I found out about Anne's crystal ball...
I think she knows, Robyn. Sorry.
