Robyn's Gift to Kirsten

The story:

The story of this quilt began thirty years ago.

Shortly after Kirsten was born, she and her parents moved to South Africa for her father's work. They lived there for two years. Then moved back to the states. Kirsten then spent the bulk of her childhood in California before her parents decided, "Hey! Let's be missionaries in Africa!" Before landing in the Ivory Coast, where she lived for her High School years, her family first had training in exotic locations like North Carolina and France.

With all of this shuffling about, Kirsten's mom was forced to be choosy regarding which childhood memorabilia to hang onto. What made the cut? A mobile. A mobile with little circus characters hanging from it. It is adorable, and from the 70's. So, oddly it is quite trendy right now with it's retro flair.

When Kirsten discovered she was pregnant, her mom sent her the treasured mobile. And as was thinking through what she wanted her baby's room to look like, she went to some quilting stores in Manhattan and found circus fabric. The circus theme was decided.

I bought a little of the circus fabric myself and the day Kirsten found out the baby was a girl, I made a dash for the fabric store to get the rest of the fabric for the quilt.

And, now, ladies and gentlemen, Andrew and Isaac present the Circus Quilt!

Andrew's favorite part is the juggling unicyclist.

Isaac prefers the quilt's overall oral appeal.

And I love the little cat peaking out from the tent.

OK, now you know.
The end.

I love the popcorn, the faces in the balloons, how the little boy on the tight rope looks like he's in pajamas, and the sweet little faces on the people that remind me of my baby quilt.

It turned out so great!

And every time I look at the boy on the unicycle, I think of Andrew. It looks like something he would like. He'll probably be able to juggle and ride a unicycle when he grows up. I wouldn't be surprised. :)

I like how the tight rope walker looks like he might fall off. So funny!

I hope Andrew can channel his physical energy into something so cool. Dave had a unicycle for a while but was never really able to ride it. Seems very Dave...so, therefore, seems very Andrew...

So cool. I wonder if I will EVER be that thoughtful with gifts. Kirsten is going to treasure this forever. When you got the idea for this, were you so excited?

Speaking of circus, one of the women who is going to watch Atticus when I go back to work grew up in a circus family (a Western Mass kind, though- no animals...lots of circus yoga and dance). So Atticus might learn some circus moves soon!

I think it's funny that there is a ringmaster, a copper-haired girl holding balloons, a boy on the unicycle who looks suspiciously like Andrew, and a very small boy tottering along on the tightrope.

Hmmm...could it be the Rice family?

Are you saying that Dave is the ringmaster? That might be a stretch. ;)

Love, love, love it.
