really good day

Yesterday started with Dave getting up at 4:30 and heading out the door for a day trip to visit a client in DC. About an hour later, at 5:30, Andrew stands by my bed and says, "Mommy, I'm really tired. I want to sleep." His voice is snuffled. His head is hot. He is sick.

I've told you this before, and I'll tell you again: I LOVE it when Andrew is sick. I LOVE it. There is something about him being sick that really takes the edge off. And by that I mean his edge. Things that normally irritate him, don't bother him anymore. He is cuddly and agreeable and charming. Him being sick reminds me of myself after a glass of wine. Mellow, slow and happy.

It's lovely.

So we spent our day doing Children's Tylenol shots, watching Little Einsteins DVDs (Thanks, Aunt Tara! He's hooked!) and deciding what makes a better tissue: a handkerchief or the couch. The couch is maintaining a strong lead. And I spent some time in the kitchen making Carrot Cake Muffins with Cream Cheese filling.

Though, I have to say, Mama V did some research about the difference between muffins and cupcakes. Turns out it's all in the ratio of flour::sugar::oil. And it makes me wonder if I have ever really made a muffin.

So, for breakfast this morning? Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese filling. So good.

In this house, the debate is between a tissue and a sleeve... those cupcakes look great... could you post the recipe? Get well soon Andrew!

Are those from Passion for Baking?
Do you like how I'm commenting to ask you instead of walking ten feet to look up the answer for myself? We just started getting veggie-box deliveries again and since we were out of town and not on the computer I am now overrun with carrots. We never eat carrots! But I do have some cream cheese and we do have lunch company . . . .

cat: tell Jake that Andrew highly recommends wiping your nose on the couch.

Susan: no...sorry. It's from another baking cookbook I have that I think is out of print. It's called The Best of Country Breads. We've been eating a lot of roasted carrots...and there is a GREAT carrot soup in Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. DO you have that one?

I'm not getting tons of carrots. I wish I was. I want to make Deborah Madison's carrot soup. And yesterday I made beef stew, and before that I made chicken soup, and I had to actually go to the store and buy carrots to have enough to go around. Store carrots! They were terrible raw, good thing they were cooked up in a stew.

I'm glad you had a good day, Robyn. We missed you.

We pick up our winter share in a couple of weeks, which means LOTS of carrots. So I think I need these recipes you speak of.

Glad your day was good. I like the cuddly sick thing, too. When Atticus is sick, he says, "Mommy, can I lie on the couch and listen to a CD?" and I get him all cuddled up while I work in the kitchen.

little bit is my snuggle bug when sick. although, last week with the throw-ups.... not such cuddles. more just horizontal with occasional using the my hand as the wastebacket. we watched chitty chitty bang bang... but a good little einstein does wonders! also backyardigans.

I fully agree--when Brice is sick, he's super cuddly and needy. I especially like it when it's fever, but no barfing.

You're so hilarious. I love how shameless you are about sugar.

Bring on the sugar! (With some carrots on the side...)

Hey Cutie, I just wish I had your table linen. The Best of Country Breads is on Amazon! It is probably offering a used one. The publisher is Taste of Home and they are no longer showing it on their site. It is a gold mine for breads. Glad Andrew is feeling better!

Recipe please!

I used to love it when Z was sick too. He was so warm and floppy and cuddly and nice.
