The Scones We Had Two Scones Ago

In high school my mom was on a total scone kick. She made them all the time. I loved them. One morning she told me she was going to make some scones and asked me which kind I wanted her to make. I told her to make "The Scones We Had Two Scones Ago". They will forever be referred to as this in my family.

They are really called "Buttermilk Scones". They are the first recipe in the Scone Book. The Basic One. The Vanilla Ice Cream of Scones. But...for some reason, they are oh so good.

I guess sometimes you want something simple. Straight Up. No frills.

And all the time you want something yummy.

Here's the Recipe!
2 c. flour
1/3 c. sugar
1 1/2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt
6T. chilled butter
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 egg
1 1/2 t. vanilla

Mix together first 4 ingredients. Cut butter up a bit and add to flour mixture. With pastry blender or two knives, cut in the butter until everything is really crumbly. Stir together milk, egg and vanilla in another bowl and then add to the crumbly stuff. MIx it up! I usually spill it all out onto the counter and knead it. :) With "lightly floured hands" of course. Pat the dough into an 8 in. circle and cut into 8 wedges. Put them on the cookie sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes at 400! Yum-O! Let me know how it goes!
