this and that, an update and a favor

this: this is the advent calendar that I made for Andrew this year. My plan is to punch holes in these cuties and strong them up around the house. Andrew is really drawn to numbers lately and I see him really getting into this. He had a peek at it on the table a few minutes ago and I had to peel him away because everything wasn't glued down yet.

that: Funny Story Time! My brother is a comic book collector. He has been since he was born, I think. He has given Andrew several gifts that are Super Friends themed, including a DVD and a coloring book. Andrew still has some work to do with pronunciation, which, I totally love. He talks about "Supid Fends" all day. yup. Supid Fends. He was talking about Supid Fends at dinner last night and Dave says, "actually, Andrew, all my friends are really smart."

an Update: the store downstairs is up and running. It is beautiful and I highly recommend a trip to Brooklyn to scope the place out. When it opened it was mostly nice toys and gifts. More and more of their stock has come in, including scrapbooking stuff and other stationary bits.

and a favor: So they have asked me to teach scrapbooking classes...to kiddos and adults and I am scared! This is where the favor comes in. I want to chicken out! I know I shouldn't...and I probably won't... This is perfect for me. It would be great to meet folks in the area that like what I like. It would be great to do creative things with other people and learn and grow and all that good stuff. But I am still scared!!! I am terrible at speaking up and saying "yeah, I have a few things to teach". I feel shy and embarrassed and need a bit of pep if you have any. But, if you don't, don't sweat it. I can always call my mom. She is extremely reliable with pep.

ok...um..

yikes.

you are obviously talented and have a lot to share. Take it from me- I am very introverted and often shy, but when I teach (after a little practice), I am a totally different person. I get into my teaching world and am often quite zany (not a word I would EVER use to describe my non-teaching self). Take a student centered approach- then you will be more of a guide than the center of the class leader. You can do it!!

I have the perfect resource for you. Whenever you are feeling worried about whether you can do it, or short for ideas, or concerned about whether you can attract an audience for your particular skills and talents, go look at this great website. It's perfect for you!

Robyn I used to think that my mom was the best scrapbooker out there. But I showed her your website once and she didn't believe that you actually make this stuff. Really.

You could bring card stuff when you visit me and try to teach me how to make something. If you can teach me to do anything nice with paper, I think you'll be good to go.

Once Sprout comes along you might not have so much time for things like this, so if you have the time and energy now, invest it in your neighborhood a little. You won't be sorry!

Robyn, you will NEVER regret doing this-but you would hate it if they hired someone else. I would like to remind you-YOU ARE A TEACHER. And you are right about the opportunity for community outreach. Where did all that artistic talent come from anyway?

If you just taught me how to cut such a perfect circle I would be indebted to you.

Robyn, this job is perfect for you! You already have lots of experience teaching people how to stamp' it up and be artsy with paper. The people who come are going to be those who love playing with colors and patterns and recording their thoughts. These are your peeps! They aren't going to be critical of you; they will love you! Besides, they'll be focused on their project. And you can't beat the commute.

When God gave me my job in Salem, I was really unhappy in teaching and thought it was because He had work there for me to do. But I surprised to discover that the job was a gift for my own happiness. Because He loves me! Maybe this job is a gift to you to bless you with community and more contentment about living in the city.

tough love approach: you're kidding, right? Get your butt down there and teach, teacher.

I've never seen such talent. After showing my brother something on your site and commented how cool whatever it was you were working on was, he just said everything you did was incredible. And you know my brother! Pretty high praise, I'd say.

Have a blast with that course!

The stuff that you make is awesome. And as for being scared, well, of course you are! Lots of people would be, to teach a class to other people. The best thing I've found is just to say, right up front, "I'm a little nervous about teaching this class, so bear with me!" And bring examples of your work so they know you're awesome. I think you should do it, as payback to the gods who put a scrapbooking store in your building.
