peeking at glamour

Last night Dave and I went out to dinner. I bought a dress and new high brown boots and spent time worrying about my hair. I drove into the city to meet Dave in Hell's Kitchen. We arrived, checked our coats and sat down to a great meal.

But there was a catch.

The meal was free. At least our meal was free. The dinner was a fundraiser for Dave's work and although all we paid for was my new dress and boots, others paid $5000 a plate. I bet you are wondering about my dress and boots.

My husband works for an independent news organization that is small but highly valued in various circles. All night we heard about the wonders of the show and it's host and how even though most everyone paid a pretty penny for their meals, more money was needed.

We sat with other staff from the show and everyone was passing rumors about the famous people that they saw or that were suppose to be there or that would preform later. I guess right before Dave and I sat down Susan Sarandon walked by all frazzled looking the green room. I didn't see her.

I did see Jesse Jackson, Willy Nelson, Jackson Brown, Wallace Shawn, Dick Gregory and Danny Glover. It was a Who's Who of celebrity activists.

At another fundraising event last year, the big name was Jack Black. He came with his wife (or maybe girlfriend?) and their new baby. He wasn't there last night. Too bad.

So after the meal we went into a theatre to hear more about the show, activism, and hear Willy and Jackson play music. Then my back started hurting and Sprout was getting rowdy (I mean, Dave was complaining about getting kicked!) so we made an early exit. And as I walked up the aisle to the door I know everyone was admiring how fashionable I was.

Especially with my best accessory.
A cute, round belly.

Yes! Where is the picture?

Yeah, who cares about the yummy croissants? Let's see the dress!

Downright meanie posting croissant pictures and hyperlinking celebrities. There's a reason Joan Rivers has a monopoly on red carpet coverage: she understands we want to see the dress.

Boots, too. And if you care to fuss with your hair again, I'm not complaining . . .

!!!!!!???? You didn't take a picture!? You decided you'd better save your camera's memory for the croissant photo shoot, instead?

I understand. Croissants are very glamorous (they're french, after all). Hmmm, maybe you could see if one of the other DN staffers caught a pic of you--you know, one who didn't bake that morning and was still feeling handy with the camera by evening...

Do you ever make chocolate filled croissants? Those have to be my favorite thing ever after I tried one for the first time a couple of years ago.
