What's next for the Rice's?

I called my mom when we got back from San Francisco and she was relieved we were home. "I sure hope you stay put for a while!"

"Well, Mom. My next trip will be to see you!"

"Oh?"

"Dave got that job in Tanzania and they want him in early October. So I'm bringing the boys and we'll be staying with you while he is there."

So, so wild. Dave has been hired by the UN to archive the Rwanda Tribunals. He'll be flying to Tanzania in a week and a half to set up a system of managing the hours and hours of tape they have. I am so proud of him. Seriously. Bursting-at-the-seams proud. Such important work and my funny, fuzzy cutie will be doing it.

I have to admit I'm a little excited at the prospect of him bringing me cool stuff from his trip. But my burning question right now is: Should I let him bring the camera?

In case you're interested....the journaling reads:

I am so proud of you.

As I write this you are preparing for a trip to Tanzania. You’ve been hired by the UN as a consultant to archive the media from the Rwanda tribunals. And I am so proud of you.

I remember when we were first married. You knew you wanted to be an archivist. I sort of knew what that meant, but I didn’t know where that path would take us. I didn’t know we would move to New York. I didn’t know that we would live apart for 9 months as you worked on your certification. I didn’t know that you would work for a progressive news program building their archive from scratch and preserving information for others to use and benefit from. And I would never have predicted this.

You have come so far. I love what you do. I love that you love what you do. I love that you present at media conferences and give guest lectures at NYU. I love that channel 13 created a position just for you because they wanted you on board so badly. And now this. This very, very important work of making sure important information will be preserved. Will be remembered. A step in the process of eliminating genocide. And an important one.

Well done, my love.

Yes, well done! What an experience Tanzania will be...

I love how you're both archivists in your own right...

Many, many congratulations! That is really exciting. What an incredibly opportunity. How long will his trip be? Does it depend on how long the project takes or is it already determined? I bet you (and your boys) will miss him like crazy, but very, very cool that he is going.

He'll be there for a week to set things up and then he'll manage it a bit from home when he gets back.

Thanks!

What an insightful comment!

Everybody should have somebody in their life who notices their triumphs and landmarks and celebrates them with such specificity, attention and genuine love. Dave is lucky to have such a good celebrator in his midst.

And, um, that is SUCH a cool font! I love that H!

Yeah Dave! So exciting. I look forward to hearing the Africa stories. And the Rwanda stories. Well, I guess all the stories.

Will he be able to talk about his work when he comes back?
What a big deal- how long will he be gone for? Such important work...I can see why you are so proud. And it's wonderful that you are already documenting the experience.
I think this deserves you guys buying or borrowing another camera- we can't do w/o your pictures on this end, but he needs one, too!

As an aside...maybe we can meet up halfway sometime when you are at your mom's...although I forget how fare you are away from here.

Wow, Dave, this is incredible. I'm proud of you too. Tell Robyn, "no camera, no gifts." Dill, let him take the camera - he'll only be taking amazing shots for some awesome scrapbooking. Go Dave!

wow, what an amazing opportunity and how lucky he is to have such a supportive family to help him follow his dream.
We all need goals in our life and I'm really pleased for him to be well on track to meeting his!

Congratulations Dave! What a exciting opportunity!

Please let him take the camera so we can see your pages on Tanzania. You will be joint archivists on his trip.

I can't wait to hear about mommy school:)
