morning

Andrew has a new trick. He now opens the door to his room. I know, I know. I'm really lucky that he has only recently discovered that opening his door does not alter his life as he knew it. But, the thing is, him opening his door has altered my life as I knew it.

A few nights last week we heard him up wandering around the apartment at 2 in the morning. Which, first spooked us, then was just plain annoying. So, after a night or two of putting him right back to bed after hearing him up, he's not doing that anymore. But, he is getting up earlier.

We used to have these cushy mornings. Andrew would get up at like 7, 7:15 and play in his room. He would do a few puzzles, look at some books, sing a few songs all before we'd go in to get him. It was the way he liked to wake up. It was the way we liked to wake up. No rushing about. Everyone sort of does their own thing for a while before demands like breakfast and getting dressed are made. It was lovely. And I had no idea how good I had it.

This morning Andrew was walking around in the dark at 6:15. Just wandering around. He doesn't come into our room unless we call him...and I wish he did. I wish he would come right to our room. That way I would know right away when he was up and I wouldn't feel on edge listening for him throughout the night.

My brother taught my nephew how to read a clock at about this age. Ashton learned that he couldn't get up until 7 and he knew what 7 o'clock looked like on his clock. And, not only that, but he would also let my niece know when it was time to get up. So, I think it's time that Andrew has his own clock. I was thinking something like this. But, I'll probably pick up something way more reasonable at a dollar store and call it a done deal.

Now. Who wants to go out for coffee? Because with all this nocturnal parenting, I've become a regular patron at our local cafe.

Name the time. I'm there.

This is last week's batch of December Dailies. I didn't include the one that you've already seen the photos for, or the ones that reveal Christmas secrets to certain readers. ;)

I had a friend put a small digital alarm clock in her son's room and she taped a piece of paper with the number "7" above the hour number so that he would know that he could not leave the room until the clock showed that number at the far left.

I forgot to tell you that before leaving your place the other day Lucas spotted that (very huge) train set in your bedroom. We've been watching that same train set in the KBToys Christmas window for 2 years now (sometimes we go there just to window watch the train set go by). His eyes got so big and I was afraid that we'd have trouble saying goodbye, but somehow we had no problems. I've placed a bet with D that he'll remember the next time we come over and will go straight to your bedroom.

That train set comes out at Christmas and Andrew, as you might imagine, LOVES it. It's fun and big and noisy and festive. PERFECT for him. It's not normally in our bedroom, but I thought it should be out of sight during the party. But, Lucas is more than welcome to come over and play Christmas trains with Andrew. Now that the party is over and all! ;)

If Jacob gets up before 7AM (wich is most days), he knows that he has 2 choices: 1) he comes in our bed and sleeps or chills until 7. 2)he goes to the living room to play until 7. Of course, he doesn't know if it's really 7 but I try to be really honnest about it....

7:00 sounds so dreamy!

Although lately Atticus has been getting up (he's in our room) and going downstairs for time to himself. It's wonderful. I get to sleep in a little later with Enzo (later than 5:30!) and sort of ease into the day a bit more. This is completely new for us. We tried the clock thing for a while (our time was 6), but it didn't work. I don't know why, really. It just got more annoying than anything. I decided that I was just better off to get up and have my coffee. maybe we'll try again, though.

Robyn -

My Andrew learned door knobs in the past couple of weeks, which makes my life sort of crazy too, although I'm lucky that they are still in their cribs, but I can see how painful that will be when the time comes! Good luck with the clock thing.

Isn't it weird how you don't realise how nice a routine you have with little children until it changes?!
We spend all our time encouraging them to be independant and then suddenly they learn new things and life isn't quite so easy any more. Enjoy this change, you never know what new 'new thing' is just around the corner!!!

For my very curious readers...this is what that link Firefly posted went to:

Prospective Immigrants Please Note
by Adrienne Rich

Either you will
go through this door
or you will not go through.

If you go through
there is always the risk
of remembering your name.

Things look at you doubly
and you must look back
and let them happen.

If you do not go through
it is possible
to live worthily

to maintain your attitudes
to hold your position
to die bravely

but much will blind you,
much will evade you,
at what cost who knows?

The door itself makes no promises.
It is only a door.
