apple buns

I learned about seasonal cooking when I was first married and was cooking through the Vegetarian Epicure. She has her recipes sorted by season with pumpkin soups in the fall, leafy salads in the spring and heavy tomato use at the end of summer. Now I have strong associations with what time of year things should be eaten. Why freeze strawberries? I'd feel weird eating them in November.

Anyway, I have such strong season::food feelings that they don't always make sense. When we started getting apples from our fruit share in August, I kept thinking, 'but I'm not ready for apples! It can't be time for apples! It's August!" But the local orchards didn't care what I was ready for. They produce when they produce and luckily everyone else scarfed down the apples while I wrapped my head around apple season.

I am starting to embrace that it is indeed time for apples. And I'm celebrating with these apple buns. The dough gets sprinkled with shredded apple and cinnamon and I rolled up an apple slice in each bun.

Welcome Fall. Don't pass too quickly.

recipe from here of course.

So funny that you posted this because I plan on making these today! We have my in laws coming so I wanted to make something to have around and of course with apples!

How many did it make?

These buns look FANtastic! I think the part about eating them that I'd like most is sinking my teeth into that big chunk of apple. Such a yummy idea!

The freezer is my best friend! When we had were with our former CSA in Chicago, our share was 3-4 times more bountiful than what we get with our current CSA. Freezing and canning was the only way to get through the food that week. And being able to open up some tomatoes or peppers in February helped us tolerate those long Chicago winters (and tolerate all the cabbage and carrots and other root veggies we were getting sick of having to eat in those months).

And growing up in a tropical area, apples were associated with (and served as a treat at) Christmastime, not Fall! Today I think that's just crazy.

Shannon,

I divided the dough in half and cut eight wedges from each half. So...16. But, she doesn't have you divide it..I really have no idea how she gets so many rolls the way she does it. But, Shannon, the rolls were HUGE. You could easily first divide the dough into thirds and then make 8 from each of those.

Yeah so I wish I read your comment before I did it. I totally should have divided the dough. It is a mess! I hope they taste good because they were a disaster to roll up!
