coming together!

ohhhh this is a good feeling.

I was having a really hard time figuring out how I wanted to lay out the buildings on the quilt. I spent a morning or two just trying out different ideas and not liking any of them. Details were getting lost. There was too much empty space. And I've put too much into this to not like the end result.

So I talked to some friends and explained my dilemma. One suggested 'scenes'. She suggested I break it up into smaller groups. I liked that idea because I thought it would give more attention to the details. It would be easier to look at. And also, I liked the idea of grouping things with a little overlap. I thought it looked more interesting. So, thanks for the scenes idea, Kirsten!

Then, another friend agreed to come over and give an extra set of eyes. We played with all kinds of groupings thinking about things like: color, size and time. I wanted things that happened about the same time to be together. After she and I hashed out the groupings I felt like I was ready to roll! Thanks for the extra eyes, Mama V!

I love that other people are into this. So sweet (and sooo helpful) that friends are willing to hear my quilting dilemmas and talk me through solutions. Unexpected support! I love it!

So, here are some groupings. I still have two more panels to make. Then I will put some black strips in between the squares to separate them (and look a little like the city streets) and finish her up.

Sorry, but I have to point out this little detail. Right now it's my favorite part and has me high-fiving myself in my sleep. This is our CSA. Every Saturday we pick up fruit, veggies and eggs in the garden at our church where Farmer Ben drops them off. But how stinkin' cute is that!?!? And how stinkin' cute am I to make it!?! I mean, honestly. There is just no denying it.

Have a great weekend!

Robyn! This is just too much! I love it. I have to come see it. The combination of the CSA and the stained glass window (right?) makes that definitely my favorite square so far.

This is almost making me want to quilt again . . .

Oh, Robyn, I love how this is coming together! You are going to need a lot of trees, which by the way are such a nice touch!!! This is such a cute project -- so much time and detail went into this. I just can't wait to see the final product.

This is so cute! I can't even tell you how much I looooove this project of yours. It's this wonderful combination of quilting, scrapbooking, and autobiography. What a fantastic treasure for your boys.

Also, please tell me you're going to stitch a yellow dotted line down the center of the "roads"? I'm sure you're already on it though.

You know, Wendy, I hadn't thought of that until I was writing up this post and I considered it. I think I might play around with that idea to see if it works! Thanks!

I adore this quilt. I would like to mention to you, Robyn, that you have inspired me to make curtains for Sophia's room. So far, they're coming out pretty stink'n well! I want to be able to make cool things like you! You're cool.

So, if you ever consider entering a quilting contest, this would win hands down. It's amazing, Robyn. So much thought and detail. So much uniqueness and personality. It's absolutely incredible. Nice work.
