So I had this jar of grains...

and I couldn't remember which grains they were exactly. And I thought perhaps it could be bran. So when I found a recipe for Bran Muffins that looked pretty good, I added the mystery grain and hoped for the best.

And now I don't think it's bran.

The muffins actually turned out good and have they have chewy grainy bits all through them...but I don't think they are suppose to.

No one's seemed to mind, however. Or even notice. All Isaac had to say about them was "mooooore!"

Anybody know what that mystery grain is?

School's canceled today and we are home building train tracks and planning to romp later in all that fun stuff that covered our city last night. I love snow days.

Wheat berries? Didn't you have a wheat berry craze awhile back?

Looks like pearled barley?

I wondered about wheat berries too...but I have another bag of them and they do look different.

yeah, maybe barley...

My barley is lighter than that but that was my first guess, too.

Good day for mushroom-barley soup!

I would almost definitely say it was pearl barley. Lovely in a casserole, possibly not quite so nice in a muffin! They needs lots of slow cooking but worth the time in the end.

When I opened your blog, I thought, "Mmmm, barley!" but then after I read your post, I wasn't confident of myself. That was my first thought, though.

Barley is definitely chewy.

I have never had a barely muffin. It sounds heavenly to me.

I'm going to guess barley. I used some for the first time the other day in a soup. I love barley now!

I'm going to say that I have absolutely no clue. I guess I need to get in touch with grains.
