weekend: outside

I love going to the Botanical Gardens. This time of year, I like going often to watch each tree perform its show. In years past I would go to the gardens with Dave and the boys because, well, what else were they going to do? But this year, something has changed. It doesn't just feel like I am going to the Botanical Gardens and everyone is humoring me (which would be fine...they certainly don't need to like that stuff and I would still be pushy about going even if I was the only one that was loving it), it feels like I am taking them to the gardens. Andrew actually seems interested when I point out the tiny leaves that are starting to form on the trees. He asks what the signs say and gently taps the tops of the grape hyacinth to feel how soft they are. In the greenhouses we talked about how big some of the leaves are and we compared the different types of spines on the cacti.

It doesn't surprise me when my brother's kids can talk fluently about comic books and 1970's culture. It doesn't surprise me when my sister's kids can list professional hockey teams, their favorite players and strut their own stuff on the ice. So I'm not sure why I feel so surprised when my kids show interest in the things that interest me. But it does. Every time.

We also made a trip the Salt Marshes to walk in the reeds.
I love this place.

It sounds like a wonderful weekend. Your pictures are so sweet. I love the one of Isaac walking with his hands in his pockets - like a mini hobo. My little guy has just fallen asleep for his nap so I'm out to the porch with my coffee to start an herb garden. 'Tis the season! I love spring.
