birthday recap: the day's events

So, my friends, the birthday party did not quite go as planned. ;) It ended up having two phases.

Phase one: the beach!
When Isaac and I got to the beach it was windy, but warm. He and I set some things up while Dave drove back to our apartment to pick up Andrew and some friends. I had made up 5 picnic baskets, one for each family. In each basket were: a container of chicken salad, a container of sliced pineapple, a container of assorted pickles, one pretzel for each person and a container of honey dijon mustard. There was a lei, a bucket and a shovel for each kid. There were also plates, napkins, forks, cups and wet wipes. And each family got a kite.

Mama V and her boys showed up and the kids played in the sand while Mama V and I chatted.

And then it got colder and colder and colder. Isaac was shivering and covered in goosebumps. My teeth were chattering as I called Dave to quickly make a birthday plan C. Thank goodness for cell phones.

Mama V needed to get her boys home, so I gave her her picnic basket full of goodies. I called other guests to reroute them to our home and Dave picked us back up to move the party back to the apartment. But we did manage to get some kite flying in.

Phase two: our home!
When we arrived back at our apartment, we picked back up where we left off. We spread out blankets on the living room floor and picnicked all warm and cozy, away from the wind. Isaac opened his gifts, we ate cupcakes, and the kids played happily for hours. Everyone had a really good time: especially Isaac!

When we sang to him, he got squirmy in his chair. He loved it and was totally embarrassed at the exact same time. Funny, because that's always my reaction too. I have a feeling he's going to be an introvert, just like his mama.

Everyone stayed up late celebrating our little man and when the party was over I was glad everyone seemed to have a good time, glad to have such flexible friends, and glad that Isaac was so well loved.

Yay! I've been waiting for these pictures all day! Gosh, what a turn of events! :)

That's Susan in the photo full of Isaac dimples? And the little girl is Margaret in her buttoned party dress?

So, so fun! I wish I could have come!! :)

Good work on the baskets, Robyn!

Personally, I love the idea of having a beach celebration in the home--no sand :)

I like the picnic-in-the-living-room photo. We had one of those ourselves today because it was STILL so windy and cold today!

And I like the kite-flying shot. The seagulls sort of make it seem like there were a dozen kites going at the same time.

Lucas was bummed about his kite being snapped in half by that wild wind and most of all, by not getting to watch Isaac blow out a candle and enjoy a cupcake! He was SO glad that you brought us some cupcakes later. (And so were the rest of us! Phew!)

Wow! The idea was awesome! I'm sorry that it didn't go exactly as planned. Every one looks like they're having a great time!
What is the strategie with Isaac's red hair (and fair complexion)? Do you dip him in FPS60? He never seems to be wearing a hat. I might be over protective... He's just so cute!!!!

Cat, I'm not a great weather mom. ;) My kids are always the ones in t-shirts at the playground when the other kids are in their snowsuits! And they don't have hats for the summer! I can't imagine them wearing them! I think they would pull them right off...but honestly I have not tried too hard.

My strategy with Isaac is to try to keep him in the shade and have sunscreen on hand at all times. Applying it? hmmmm....

He's not gotten a sunburn yet though. And he's just not getting a few freckles!

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one that "forgets" to apply sunscreen ;) I love all your pictures but the one of you and Isaac in the blanket is my favorite.

That picture of Isaac when we were singing to him is too cute! I never saw his face. You're so right about loving the attention and being mortified.
