oats and stairs

1. Oats

I can't get enough of rolled oats right now. We have oatmeal several mornings a week and I recently made oatmeal bread and oatmeal cookies. Something about fall makes me want oats!

2. stairs

When I walk down the subway stairs carrying Isaac in his stroller, which I do at least once a day, I am always, always petrified of falling. It’s easily the most frightening part of my day. When I look at my feet I always think I'm going to fall. When I look several steps ahead, I don't feel like I am going to fall, but I worry that I should be looking at my feet. So, I force myself to look several steps ahead and hope for the best. I wish there were more elevators in my life.

Funny...I've been thinking about oatmeal lately myself, and also craving some oatmeal cookies. My husband always curls his nose - says that oatmeal cookies "aren't his favorite" but they disappear at the same rate as any other cookies I make. :o)

I know what you mean about the stairs. I don't like them myself, and carrying a stroller with precious cargo in it would make it even more scary! xo

I'm the opposite - I hate lifts! Absolutely scared to bits of them and avoid them at all costs. However, I don't think I'd enjoy carrying a precious little boy in a stroller down too many flights. The world needs more escalators!
Pleased to see that Scottish Porridge Oats have made it across the Atlantic to you!

I live on the third floor, and every time I leave, I have my 7month old in a baby carrier, and my 21 month old on my hip! One hand is free for a tight grip on the railing, and I pray my way down. I can't see my feet or the stairs because of the baby strapped on me. It is so scary!

Oatmeal cookies are lovely now in the fall, here in Norway we are already having -2C in the morning - so having something warming like a homemade cookie is a big treat to the kids.

My David is a major oats fan! I won't tell him what you've been up to in the kitchen or he'll start to get ideas.

No kidding! I think the closest elevator to us is on Atlantic, which is pathetic. I'm always surprised to come across people who are willing to lend a hand, though, which is lovely especially during the times when Lucas panics at the top of those stairs once he spots the floor way down at the bottom (I tell him the opposite of you: to look down at each step, one at a time) and he grabs hold of me and/or the stroller and messes with my balance. I think the openness of the stairwell sides (and the rush of subways arriving or going) adds to the feeling of panic. Eek!

Aren't you glad you're not having to tackle those stairs with your old heavy clunker of a stroller, though?!

P.S. My strategy on those subway stairs with a stroller in my arms is to stick far to one side and lean my side/hip along the handrail. And then I also lean way back so that if we fall, we fall back and I can potentially sit (and if Jesse leans forward to mess with my equilibrium, he's easier to tilt back). Helps me feel more grounded overall.

Yikes I can relate to the fear of falling with the stroller. Yeah that oatmeal is looking really good for this time of year.

Oh, gosh, I think I stopped carrying the stroller with baby in it up or down subway stairs at around 7 or 8 months. But I have a bad back, so I really can't do much heavy lifting anyway.

What I started doing was just pushing/pulling the stroller up and down the steps, one step at a time. Time consuming, and annoying to other people, I'm sure, but I prefer it over falling down on my butt with kiddo in tow. Or just get him out and fold the stroller, which he much prefers to do, anyway.

It seems even scarier now to me, after witnessing a lady fall down the stairs with her baby in the stroller, about two weeks ago. The elevators to the D platform at Pacific St. were not working so she was hauling the stroller down and lost her footing, ended up with a sprained ankle. It was horrible to see.
