Seeing Sqaures: the Great Cookie Project of 2010: volume 2

oh man.

This is going sooo much better than I thought it would. I pictured an all day TV marathon for the boys. Me, in a panicky voice, reminding them to give me a little space in the kitchen. Them, pulling cookies off of the counter. Me, trying to stay calm.

But, that's not what happened.

I got up early and was able to decorate 100 cookies before anyone else woke up. What?!?! What are the chances? It helped that it is a super simple design. It helped that I made the icing the day before. It helped that it was a cool morning. But still. I expected to have maybe 40 done by the time they woke up. 100!?!?

So, I was able to play with my boys this morning. Eat breakfast with the family like a normal person. Take them to the playground to try to work Isaac into needing an afternoon nap. Then we get back, have lunch and I put the 100 decorated-and-now-hardened-to-perfection cookies into little bags and start on the next 80. And here it is, not even 2:30 and they're done. Isaac is asleep. Andrew is building something wild in the bedroom and I'm DONE!

I feel happy and lucky and relieved and awesome. My friend Emily, whose wedding these are for, keeps calling me phenomenal. So, I'll go with that. I feel phenomenal. ;)

So, tomorrow I make them cute and then....the best part...we go to the wedding!

Dave and I have been looking forward to this for weeks. We have friends staying the night with the boys and we see this wedding as a weekend away...an elaborate date. A date with dinner! and wine! and dancing! and pie! and even a little church thrown in! Perfect!

Sooo...here's how I decorated them:

1. put them on the counter. ;)

2. Outline each one with white.

3. After the white hardened a little, I filled in the squares with a white 'flow'. to make the flow I just added a little extra water to the white icing. I filled them in 6 at a time so they wouldn't harden too much before step 4.

4. Add the pink loopy thing. The pink icing is thicker than the white flow, so it sinks down into it and gives the top a relatively smooth finish. Some of the loops I love and think are great! Other loops...well...I'm hoping they end up with guests that won't notice. Quality control...gets me every time.

That's it!

In case you are itching to do some cookie decorating, I wanted to point out this blog: Bake at 350. This lady is the real deal...and she's got lots of recipes if you're into that kind of thing.

ok...that's all I got. Later.

Hurray! How wonderful! They look great!

The elaborate date weekend also sounds wonderful, though I think I'd personally ditch the church idea. ;)

Phew, I thought you were going to seek out and visit a local church on Sunday morning while on vacation. Some people do that. (Just not me!)

And you mentioned pie and I wondered for a split second if you too would be providing the pie. Thing is, it wouldn't surprise me, phenomenal woman!

They look so pretty all lined up like that. I'm glad to hear it worked out, and even was better than expected! Good thing the bumps and surprised were at the beginning of the week.

Have a great weekend!

Beautiful cookies! I'm so glad you had a cool day to do that. Have fun on your weekend. I personally would just pull up a chair to the pie bar! Brilliant bride.
