I have a friend in New York that married a native. There are all kinds of perks to that. She knows where to go for the things she needs/wants....or if she doesn't, she asks her husband or in-laws. It's like she is experiencing New York at it's best because she has years of experience working with her.
Anyway, her father-in-law recommended a hairdresser for her. I'm not sure this needs to be clarified, but just in case: her father-in-law is quite eccentric and I think enjoys and nurtures that reputation a bit. If my father-in-law suggested a hairdresser for me, I'm not sure what I would think. But I don't think I would take the recommendation seriously. She did. Even though the man that was suggested has only been in the states a few months and has spotty English. Also, instead of going to a salon, he came and cut her hair in her kitchen. But, it all turned out well, she looks fantastic and the man refused payment.
Can you blame me for wanting to capitalize on this?
I asked if a similar arrangement could be made for my long and ragged mess. And if, perhaps, said friend would provide free childcare while my hair was wafting around her kitchen. I'm not really sure why, but both friend and the hairdresser agreed to this arrangement.
So this morning, I made brownies, these little boxes to put them in and thank you notes for all. This afternoon, Andrew and I drove to Queens and friend and Andrew played while I got a great haircut. It was perfect. I didn't have to worry about finding a sitter. I didn't even have to worry about finding a hairdresser. And the hairdresser, that was found for me, didn't really want to small talk. Thank goodness. Because I am good a lot of things, but small talk is not one of them.
I definitely got the good end of this deal. I'm out a bit of petty cash, a couple of brownies and some time spent doing something creative, which, I probably would have used to do something creative anyway. Right?
Now if I were only brave enough to post a pic of the new do...
