more to show

Just when I thought my quilting enthusiasm was waning (there was a day last week when I turned off my alarm at 5:15 and went right back to bed. Quilts can wait.), I got bit again by the quilting bug. That bug is relentless, I tell you.

This morning I cranked out these funky green orbs. 'What are they?!?' you ask yourself. Is she incorporating spacecraft? I thought this was a quilt about Brooklyn! Not spacecraft, my friends. trees!

So stinkin' adorable that I decided I should give myself a medal for these cuties. I love them. Retro, modern, cheeky. These are the trees that grow in Brooklyn!

Funky is the word of the day! Look at my slide! It does not get funkier than that. Well...perhaps the trees...

Ok, and this one takes some explaining. I wanted a section of the quilt to represent Coney Island. We have big, mushy, soft spots for Coney Island. It's just so tacky and crazy and fun. And it's special to us because we associate it with Andrew's birth.

Sometimes we spin the story by saying that I went into labor at Coney Island. Or even that I practically gave birth there. And both are stretching the truth. On June 11, 2005 I was 5 days overdue with Andrew. My mom was in town and it was a Saturday, so Dave was off of work. I was feeling restless and ready to get this show on the road, but what can you do? I did not want to spend the day sitting around waiting. So, we ventured to Coney Island. We walked on the beach, ate hot dogs and spicy fries and were pleasantly distracted. We even got sunburned.

Once we got back to my apartment, I lay down to take a nap and pop! My water broke. It wasn't until a grueling 21 hours later that Andrew (at 9 pounds, 11 ounces!!! sorry. I like to mention that whenever I can.) appeared. It was a hard, hard, hard labor that I blame in part, to Coney Island. It is a bad idea to go into labor sunburned and dehydrated. I don't recommend it. But a day at Coney Island under other circumstances? Now you're talking!

So the Coney Island section includes Nathan's hotdogs and the parachute jump. And that little red car flying through the air? Nope. Not Santa! It is a car for a roller coaster that I'll embroider later.

And now you are up to date on the quilt.

Walking and movement will do it every time! Way to go!

And I LOVE those retro-mod trees! They make me think that you should make some little birds to go with them. Or PIGEONS!! Ooooh!! Pigeons are definitely urban!

There are members of our church who talk about going on the parachute jump as young adults. I just think that is so neat.

Have you solved your layout conundrum?

I love the Coney Island scene.

I think I have solved the conundrum. A friend, ahem, suggested that I section it off and make little scenes. And I played around with that idea and it worked out great. ;)
